For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Hebrews 8:10 (ESV)
The people who lived in the Old Testament had an impossible task. As much as they tried, they couldn’t keep God’s covenant. In His mercy, He prepared a new covenant for His people. The truth is, God was pointing to this new covenant all along- satisfying His justice not with the blood of lambs but looking ahead to the blood of Christ. Through His Son, He put His laws into our minds and wrote them on our hearts. Even though the nation of Israel provoked God often, His desire had been to be their God all along. Now, we too, have become His people. It’s an undeserved privilege and something that should cause us to come before God with humble gratitude.
For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more. Hebrews 8:12 (ESV)
It is mercy that designed a way for us to be able to come close to the Father. God doesn’t forgive us once when we accept Christ but every single time we need forgiveness and He remembers our sins no more. We are always guided by His Spirit, but should we ever fail to obey His voice, let us not lose heart but run quickly to the Father. He accepts us when we come with a repentant heart. Because of Jesus, God is merciful toward our iniquities. He has made a way for us to be able to keep His covenant and will forever stand ready to make a way through Jesus! Look to Him and away from yourself.
