Allowing the Word to shape who we are.
I used to read the Bible with the mindset that I needed to strive for the things I was reading about. It was always something that was out there, something that I might walk into in the future. Did you know that the New Testament shows us who we are based on the finished work of Christ on the cross? It is our identity as born again believers. We don’t need to believe only for salvation, but for the very things that the Bible says about us. Having the right mindset when reading the Word will make a world of difference in how we allow It to shape us to the very core of who we are.
Because of Christ’s death and resurrection, we are free to live the life God wants us to live. We died to our old life and now our lives are intertwined with God through Christ. If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4 (ESV)
Through Christ’s sacrifice, we have received such abundant mercy! God considers us holy because now we are His. We need to cling tight to this truth and to truly believe that we are called to walk in the light because darkness no longer has dominion over us. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 9:10
We are no longer part of darkness but have become the light. This is so important to know in the dark world we live in. We shouldn’t be afraid that the darkness will overtake us but rather we should allow God’s light to expose evil by our pure actions. For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. Ephesians 5:8-11
These are just a few of the verses that describe our true identity in Christ. Allow the Word of God to shape how you see yourself and step into who you are in Christ! You can trust God’s Word.
