“Forgiveness is such an important practice in everyday life. It keeps our hearts free of bitterness and resentment and maintains a good relationship between us and God. If we forgive others, we will be forgiven by God but if we don’t- God will withhold forgiveness from us! There might be seasons in our lives when we don’t experience God’s forgiveness when we ask for it. Could it be because we have refused to offer it? Maybe we are harboring unforgiveness against someone?
But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:15 ESV
If God doesn’t forgive us, we are completely stuck. This is often the reason for stagnation in our lives. If there isn’t a continuous outflow of God’s cleansing blood over us, we are incapable of moving forward in any way. Mentally, we are so aware that we need to forgive others, but the human heart doesn’t let go of the offense that easily. It doesn’t come naturally to us. When we’ve been wronged, it’s hard to inwardly let go of the person responsible for it- especially if they don’t apologize for it. God understands how much it hurts to be wronged because He placed all of our shortcomings on His own Son. Jesus was wronged more than we ever have been or will ever be but He showed us that we are called to forgive no matter what. That’s why it’s so important to fight to keep our hearts open to God so we can receive His healing for the hurt produced by others. Satan wants us to doubt God’s love because of how others treat us but we need to trust God with our hurt. It is only when we truly understand God’s love for us and just how much we have been forgiven that we are able to be more generous with offering forgiveness. ”
