God hears the prayers we can’t express

I pray this short fictional story inspires and warms your heart today.

The autumn air was crisp and a sudden chill swept over Selah’s shoulders. She remembered the feeling and her heart froze. It was as if the outside atmosphere matched her internal emptiness. Her heart felt cold and distant. The anxiety she felt was real and nothing in her life made sense right now. Her mother, the rock of her life, had just passed away and she recently lost her job. The tears stung but they refused to roll down her cheeks, it’s as if they were stuck somewhere.

“Am I going to lose the apartment? I really don’t want another change. I don’t think I could go through it.” The evening light was slowly fading and she started to head home from her walk. She wondered if anyone else knew what it felt like to choke on your own fear and not be able to express one bit of your pain to another human being. She wondered if God even cared but He seemed to good to be true. She used to believe in Him years ago, before leukemia stole her mother, before she was faced with the reality of having to live on her own. Just before she passed the corner of the street right by where she lived, she saw it: someone had placed in their window the word “Weaver.” Was this a coincidence? Could God really be listening to the prayers she couldn’t even put into words? This providential word used to mean something for her years ago- it meant that God was in control and that He was still at work in the messy, complicated places of her life. When she was younger, God would show her this word at many different times and in many different ways. Was she ready to believe again, to really trust that God was still at work weaving her life? Her pain?

That night before bed she cried out to God and it started to feel real. Like He was listening. She prayed that God would heal her heart and make a way through the pain and uncertainty. The days passed, then they turned into weeks until one month passed. She received an email from one of the office positions she applied for and they wanted to have her for an interview. She then found out that she had the job. This brought her so much hope because she knew she didn’t have to move back with her brother. He was the only person she had left from her family, apart from her other relatives that lived in another state.

One day she was walking past the mail area at the apartments and one of her neighbors that she had never noticed before stopped to say “hi.” She asked her what her name was and told her that she would like to get to know her and invited her for tea when she was free. They exchanged numbers and chatted over text for the next few days until Selah went to visit her neighbor for the first time. She soon found out that this charming elderly lady had been a Christian counselor for 30 years and was now retired. She felt that God had placed Selah into her path because she was praying for God to send someone in her path that she could bless. The conversations with her turned into prayers and Bible studies, and Selah soon learned that God truly was at work in her life and that no prayer goes unheard. Her sweet neighbor was such a blessing to her life and it helped her experience the love of God in a very beautiful way. Things were looking up and she started going to church with her neighbor where she simply felt that she belonged.

That spring, as she was going for a walk, she remembered how in just a few months God had completely turned her life around and how faithful He was to fulfill her needs. He took care of her financially, emotionally, and spiritually. She now had a deeper understanding of God’s goodness and provision. He was worth her trust and she was never alone. It was so beautiful for her to see how God could weave her circumstances into something good.
