Escaping the trap of the self.

If you lose your life you will find it.

We live in an age of self-indulgence. People everywhere are obsessed with how to make themselves happy. We are conditioned by the world around us to want more and more things in the hopes of finally being fulfilled. We are also promised the power to do anything if only we believe in ourselves. It’s a real battle trying to escape the forcefulness of the voices of the world. We never feel enough. In order to measure up we would need to spend all our time and energy into ourselves. It’s the biggest trap because it results in us becoming our own slaves. It’s also the very opposite of what Christ calls us to do. In Matthew 16:24-25, Jesus says, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. We are not called to serve ourselves but to deny ourselves. I know it’s hard, sometimes I feel like all I can hear is the screams of the world but if we are sincere in our pursuit of self-denial, God will help us. It happens miraculously, and even though we need to be willing to deny ourselves, we could never die to ourselves in our own strength. We can only become free through Christ. And we are so privileged to! Though the voice of our self promises happiness if we listen to it- it is lying. The more we listen to it the more it tortures us- like a cancer devouring the insides. Arrogance, jealousy, and ungratefulness are only a few of the fruits of the flesh and they are deadly. If you find yourself captive to self-absorbing thoughts and no matter how hard you try to please yourself, you feel more and more unfulfilled, please take heart today. I am living proof that you can be free because I am living in this freedom right now! It is the most fulfilling way of life and it is so empowering to lose your life so you can find it in Christ! I have such peace and joy that I never imagined would be possible. You too, can be free from yourself today!
